PAUL SUPPORTS SHF IN QUEST FOR ASIAN GAMES BERTH

Report & Pictures By Shamir Osman

11 May 2014 (The New Paper On Sunday)

Singapore Men's Hockey Team fell short to automatically qualify for the upcoming Asian Games this September to be held at Incheon, Korea as the team failed to win the Asian Games Qualifier held a couple of months back in Dhakar, Bangladesh. To emerge champion ahead of better ranked teams such as Oman, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was the qualifying criteria set by the SNOC to send the National Team to Korea after the dismal showing 4 years ago in the last edition of the Asian Games where they lost all their games and finished last in the competition.

To prove to SNOC that the National Men's team meant business, the team have drafted a new training program leading up to the Asian Games and scheduled 2 test matches with Oman to try and book the tickets for Incheon.

An annual tradition of the Tannibellies during the Chinese Lunar New Year saw members of THC gathered at Robin’s house to usher in the Year of the Horse with some Loi Hei and Poker fun over the festive season.

This annual gathering brings together all members of the THC players and their families to mingle and bond with one another during this joyous occasion.

At Tannibellies we believe in it’s not all about the hockey we play, but the friendship and bonding, both on and off the pitch, which are the utmost important factors of what the club set out to achieve.

Tannibellies would like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year and a Prosperous 2014!

USHERING IN THE YEAR OF THE HORSE

TOUGH LIGA SEASON AHEAD FOR THE BELLIES

Tannibellies will start the defense of their Hockey Liga title on the 15th of February 2014 when they play against tournament new comer, Jansenites, at the Delta Hockey Stadium.

This year’s competition attracted an overwhelming response from the local hockey fraternity that will feature a total of 22 teams and each team will play a total of 14 matches that includes a pool and knock out competition format.

The Bellies will go into the 2014 competition with a 100% record of 0 loses and all wins from the previous season. At the same time, in team news, The Bellies also welcomed back experienced national defender Saifulnizam and skillful forward Syah for the Liga competition but will miss the hardworking duo of Samuel and Effin due to personal commitments overseas. Another player missing from selection, since 2013 season, will be Kai Bin who is uncontactable due to personal reasons. Kelvin looks set to play in goal again for The Bellies after a wonderful display last year.

The Bellies will have to dig deep and play a more controlled overall game this season to come out on top once again as competition heats up.

GEARING UP FOR LIGA

There is no better way to kick start the off season preparation for the upcoming 9-a-side Liga Tournament than by having some fun with Soccer under the Sun.

The main bulk of the Bellies Team got together last Saturday, 11th of January 2014 at the IA futsal pitch to showcase some of their "samba" footballing skills and left the pitch feeling sore and burnt after 2 hours of soccer under the hot mid day sun.

The Bellies will be looking into defending their Liga Title this season but have been warned about some tough opponents against some experienced team looking to spoil the party. The Bellies team will be boosted with the return of a few key players such as Syah, Kelvin, Saiful and Robin for this pre-season league but may miss Samuel and Effin due to personal committments and overseas studies being scheduled at the same time of the games.

This year's tournament will feature a total of 14 teams including The Bellies and will consist of 14 games which includes the final placing game. The event organiser have yet to published the tournament schedule as the closing date is by the end of January 2014. In the meantime if you are interested to know more you may log onto http://hockeyliga.wix.com/2014 to stay in touch with the latest tournament development.

THC drafted in for the new Hockey League 4

In the upcoming Singapore Hockey League there will be no Men's & Women's Premier League in 2014. It has instead been replaced by League 1 to 5 for Men's and 1 & 2 for the Women's competition. The move by the SHF competition's committee to change the competition format have raised many eye browns from affiliates and convenors as this amendments may feature 2 teams (A & B teams deemed fit by the club's own selection) to be playing in the same league. This may once again end up like the 2011 League Cup Finals where SRC Team A played SRC Team B in the all SRC finals which drew mixed feelings and sentiments where the league became a 1 club dominance in recent times.

The SHF League 4 will be played in the 3rd Quarter of 2014 from the beginning of August till the end of November. The League will feature 8 teams which consist of 5 lower ranked team in 2013 Division 3 and the top 3 teams from 2013 Division 4.
